Principal Statistical Analyst - College HE project

HESA exists to enhance the competitive strength of UK higher education by collecting, analysing, and disseminating data about the UK HE sector. We provide a trusted source of information, supporting better decision making, and promoting public trust, to support this strategy.

Our strategy is delivered through our people. Ensuring that our staff have the skills, capabilities, and tools to do their jobs effectively is therefore a key theme underpinning all our activities and objectives. This includes providing opportunities for development, growth, and learning.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Statistical Analyst to join a new team working on HESA’s new ‘College HE’ project. Further information about the role is listed below, in addition, please find full role profile here.

The high-level vision for this project is to create a single consistent, comparable, detailed source of information about all students enrolled on higher education (HE) courses in further education (FE) colleges, in the UK. Each devolved administration in the UK collects its own college HE dataset using different data definitions and standards. Having multiple different administrative datasets, which are quite different from each other, makes it difficult for users to assemble and produce information about the whole UK HE student population. We want to address this by publishing a single and complete source of data based on all administrative data collections, regularly. This role will play a key part in addressing this gap in the data, and improving our understanding of the HE sector.

As part of this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate expertise in the extraction, manipulation, and preparations of appropriate and often complex data.
  • Use advanced data manipulation techniques and/or statistical skills to analyse and quality assure extract from HESA databases.
  • Develop effective solutions and smarter ways of working to drive efficiency savings.
  • Provide advice, support and direction to colleagues working on complex or highly technical outputs.
  • Summarise technical information in written and/or verbal reporting to meet user needs.
  • Support the development of Lead Statistical Analysts and Statistical Analysts within Data & Innovation through training, coaching, and mentoring, raising any identified external training requirements with line management.
  • Plan and deliver data migration activity to transform data from legacy systems and external sources into a format compatible with existing data.
  • Drive greater value from HESA data assets though research and product development.

You will be educated to Bachelors degree level in a numerate subject or have equivalent work experience and knowledge, including knowledge of basis descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, experience of manipulating/analysing data from large databases, have a track record of developing positive and productive working relationships with internal colleagues and external customers. Strong attention to detail and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel.

Postgraduate qualification in a numerate subject is highly desirable, as is experience using Oracle and/or SQL, experience of using R, Python or Stata or other similar data manipulation software and existing knowledge of the HE sector along with staff management experience, including performance management, effective delegation and work scheduling.
